For decades, we have persistently been working for the environment. It is our honor to be the pioneer of safe painting, surface treatment and the use of colors.
We continuously develop our products and choose high-quality raw materials carefully. We do not stop at fulfilling the minimum environmental and safety requirements, but go a step further to seek to study and minimize the environmental and health impacts of our products.
Durable is ecological
For us at Tikkurila, being an eco-friendly means, among others, high-quality and long life of painted surfaces. The quality of products translates to better to durability and ensures longer maintenance painting intervals. This is how we reduce the environmental impact of painting.
Water-borne is environmentally friendly
We are a company that makes environmentally friendly paints. It also means that we develop and promote the use of water-borne products that have as low an environmental impact as possible.
Our low-emission, water-borne paints are manufactured from high-quality raw materials, and the product properties are ensured with a thorough set of field and laboratory tests.
Most Tikkurila paints are water-borne. Our goal is to make the interior paint selection targeted at consumers and professionals within the EU countries 100 percent water-borne by 2020. In 2017, the share of water-borne interior paints within the EU countries was 98.9 percent (2016: 98.7).
3 REASONS TO CHOOSE A WATER-BORNE PAINT
1. Low-emissions and better indoor air
The thinner of water-borne products is water, which is the safest choice in terms of both the environment and the painter. Especially during painting, the water-borne paints have smaller environmental impact compared to solvent-borne paints. Thanks to low emissions, the quality of indoor air remains better and the allergy risks lower.
2. Durable surfaces
Tikkurila's water-borne products have been proven to be of high quality and durable. When used as instructed, water-borne products enable long maintenance painting intervals. Please remember that a surface painted with a solvent-borne product can be maintenance painted with a water-borne product.
3. Easy and safe to use
Water-borne paints dry quickly. They are also better for the health, because almost only water evaporates from them. Odorlessness and short drying times make them easy to use. Read the information on the product label and the safety data sheet before starting to paint.

Different types of paint
The most important task of paint is to protect and decorate. High-quality paint appropriate for the purpose can be crucial in reducing the maintenance need of a painted surface and extend the life of the item, structure or building.
Tikkurila produces paints for a variety of uses. Depending on the desired properties, there are also vast differences between the ingredients used in production. The raw materials that Tikkurila chooses greatly affect the environmental and health impacts of the products. Tikkurila’s R&D continuously looks for the raw materials which function well technically and burden the environment as little as possible, in close cooperation with Tikkurila's sourcing and raw material suppliers.
Our interior wall paints are breathing, that is, they have a high aqueous vapor permeability. Tikkurila’s exterior paints have been optimized to protect the surface from the weather stress and direct rainfall, but also to allow aqueous vapor to pass through it.
Right product for different surfaces
Different surfaces, such as wood, concrete or metal, require different paint properties. Paint protects the surface material from the weather and mechanical stress. The required properties are different for interior and exterior paints.
In exterior use, the paints are stressed by sunlight, moisture fluctuations, and mold and bluestain fungi, among others. Fungicides are often used in exterior paints to protect the paint film from mold and algae.
Interior surfaces are primarily exposed to mechanical wear, e.g. abrasion and dents, as well as cleaning agents and other substances, such as grease. Interior paints must be cleanable and wear- and abrasion-resistant.
Packaging of paint
Tikkurila wants to continuously minimize the environmental impact of its operations and products, including packaging materials. Depending on the operating country and product family, Tikkurila’s products are packaged in either metal or plastic cans or larger containers. The advantages of metal cans include their suitability for tinting, durability, and easy handling during transport. Plastic cans are light and easy to use.
The main criteria in selecting packaging material for cans are quality, durability, and functionality. These requirements must be taken into account throughout the chain: in transport, in tinting the product, and in customer use. We are constantly looking for new and more ecological packaging options. We also instruct our customers in the responsible disposal and recycling of packages.
Sustainable packaging solution with enhanced user experience and less waste
Tikkurila’s ecological packaging solutions include packaging that utilizes Post Industry Recycled (PIR) plastic, among other things. The new packaging material is available for Vivacolor Green Line products in the Baltics. Using recycled plastic reduces the amount of waste, material loss and need for virgin materials. It also lowers carbon dioxide emissions in the supply chain and ecological footprint of packaging.
In addition, Tikkurila has in use a plastic bag for packaging paint in Sweden and Finland. The bag requires less raw materials, energy and water for its production than traditional paint cans. It is easy to empty, which means there is very little wasted paint. After use, the package can be rolled up and disposed of as combustible waste. In Finland, plastic bags are used for packaging our Tikkurila White, a soft white shade selected by our color designers for painting interior walls. In Sweden, the packaging is used for Becker’s Elegant wall paint.
